Job Description The Washington Post’s Data Team is seeking an innovative, technologically savvy reporter to find attention-grabbing ways to explain how we live through data. This one-of-a-kind position will be embedded in The Post’s new Wellness Desk, which is tasked with reimagining health service journalism and finding new ways to cover a variety of personal health topics, including healthy eating, fitness, mental well-being, sleep, relationships, LGBTQ issues, health disparities, disability and chronic illness. We are looking for a candidate who will generate data-driven ideas focused on how we live every day to shape this essential coverage. The ideal person will acquire and analyze data and report sharp, memorable stories in unique ways that make readers take notice. The reporter will balance taking on their own stories and analyses with helping colleagues develop their ideas, all while maintaining a rigorous statistical approach that reflects the best of The Post’s award-winning data journalism. Candidates for the position should be curious lifelong learners who are happy to help a teammate and who thrive off sharing knowledge and working together. Key skills for the job are critical thinking, a deep skepticism, pioneering spirit and a healthy dose of good cheer. Candidates also should have experience in data journalism or in an equivalent data storytelling role, be adept with an analysis language such as R or Python, and have familiarity with SQL, the command line and version control. The ability to think creatively about potential data sources is a must for this role, and some experience with survey data, data scraping and/or spatial analysis skills would be a major plus. This position is based in Washington, D.C., on the Post’s Data Team, a growing group of journalists who work across the newsroom and use programming and statistics to unearth important stories from data.
